I was sick all week last week with the stomach flu. I'm willing myself into wellness by the arrival Christmas, however!! While sick I managed to get all the last of our presents wrapped (with the hubbs help of course!) and now we are set for Christmas- all 3 of them!!
One tradition I wanted to incorporate for little Ella's sake is a Christmas story book about Jesus' birth. I haven't been out to the shops to look around yet and may just wait for them to go on sale afterward. If you have any suggestions, please leave your comment!
As far as photography goes, I plan to add some final touches to my fashion portfolio this January. I still hope to shoot for OMM and Mode. In the mean time I have found myself in rapture of my beautiful daughter. Here are some shots I took of her this month:

Ella's First Thanksgiving
This was little Ella's first Thanksgiving! While I don't think she was too impressed with anyone's cooking, she was a happy little clam to be ooohed and aaahed over all day and all night. She is a baby who LOVES to be held and today, let me tell you, she was not set down a moment!
Anyhow, this is the outfit she rocked last night... today she wore something similar, but the Gap skirt was replaced by similar jeans. She still had on her Cable Sweater and booties though.
Oh! And as a side note: I've never heard so many people tell me that she looks like her mama! Seems like she's growing to resemble me more and more each day ( :

4 Weeks of baby and 1 night to ourselves ( :
Thanks to our amazing friend, Lori Charlish, who came over to watch Ella a couple hours- Jelani and I were able to have a relaxing, romantic dinner this evening. Though we were both dead tired from Ella's long, very, very long nights up- we both enjoyed our first visit at the Lauro Kitchen and had some good conversation over a candlelit dinner.
Jelani discovered the Lauro Kitchen on a drive by. And what I mean by that is we happen to drive past this restaurant quite frequently. He knew it would be a bit pricey, so he looked up the reviews on Yelp to make sure it would be worth it; who knows when we'll get out of the house again? Needless to say the reviews were awesome, just like our experience there. The staff was friendly, the ambiance calm and inviting and the food- savory.
I definitely recommend the plate I ordered: Goat Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breast with Quince Sauce and Spinach, but Jelani's plate was equally as yummy and luckily I even found a picture of it on their website: Roasted Pork Loin with Spicy Plum Sauce , Garnet Yams and Braised Greens
Another PLUS: Pix pastries is just across the street, so if you are in the mood for European inspired pastries (chocolate too!) make a stop there on your way out!

Nursery: more pictures up this week
This is a shot of the Rocking Chair Nook that I took the night before Ella's arrival... This is the yellow rocker that we saved from the dump accented with an authentic retro lamp. The awesomely modern side table was a steal at Ross Dress For Less for less than 15 bucks. The tiny white frame is also an thrift store purchase that Jelani picked up at the Salvation Army.
Outside of this frame are many more Goodwill finds. Jelani and I made it our personal project to hunt down old wooden toys and hand paint them for her room. We also found a couple of frames to paint as well.
Since coming home from the hospital I haven't had much time to myself (try attaching 10 pounds of suckling slash screaming flesh to your boob for 4 weeks!) so this is still the only picture I have of the nursery. If you can't tell, it was taken at night so the colors are not coming across spot on, but it will do for now ( : Next ones will be bright and shiny! Oh wait. It IS October isn't it? Well then, they will be normally lit and gloomy ( :
I plan to return to work this week so I will be making the journey up our slick stairs of death where my office and Ella's sweet nursery await!

Breastfeeding: Challenges and Rewards
Jelani drops me off at the Lactation Clinic a few minutes early so I hurry Ella inside to stave off the cold. We walk into a huge building that houses a few different Providence clinics and stores. Our destination is easy to find; first door to our left.
Once inside, I find myself silently criticizing the poor layout of the waiting area, where the presence of 4 other parents causes the long, narrow space to feel overcrowded. I instinctually cradle my daughters head close to my body imagining all the tiny germs floating from person to person through the hot, recycled air. Since the only 2 chairs are already occupied, I lean against the wall and begin soothing Ella, who is startled by the sound of two screaming infants in the room. This is her first time hearing the sound of another child's scream and yet, surprisingly she does not burst into tears herself. She does, however, give me her "crazy eyes"look, which nearly cracks me up. (This is where her eyes turn into little saucers and she purses her mouth into a little "o".)
I finally relax a bit once the area cleared out and I am the only parent left. I sit down and bop Ella in my arms while thinking of my sore breasts and our upcoming appointment.
Yesterday my doctor advised me to make an appointment with a Lactation Consultant, since 2 weeks have passed and I am still experiencing pain from breastfeeding.
The past few nights have been a nightmare, since that is when I am most tired and less likely to tough it out for Ella's 40 minute feedings. I have come to dread nursing- the pain, the itchy, sharp pangs of Ella's suckling. Instead of feeling closer to my daughter through her feedings, I have felt tense, fearful and at times, resentful. What should be a bonding experience has become a daily ritual of suffering. Previous to giving birth, I thoroughly researched the pro's and con's of breast milk versus formula. What I discovered about a formula-fed child and their increased chances of developing asthma, diabetes and obesity were alarming. I easily decided that there is no excuse to deprive my daughter of breastmilk and it's irreplaceable benefits. I remind myself of these benefits as I painstakingly wait for the consultant to finally appear 10 minutes after my scheduled appointment, by which time Ella has finally cried herself into hysterics.
After introducing myself, I hand Ella off to the consultant for a quick bathroom break and when I return am surprised to already hear feedback about Ella's latch.
"She's hurting my knuckle right now," the consultant says. She quickly explains that after looking under Ella's tongue, she has discovered a frenulum. "A frenulum," she says, "is a little piece of skin under her tongue that restricts movement. It interferes with her ability to cover her bottom gums, so they are rubbing onto your nipple each time she sucks. This could be the cause of your pain."
In other words, my daughter is chewing on my nipples like bubblegum. And this might be the cause of my pain? I raise an eyebrow and keep quiet.
After a few quick questions about Ella's birth and growth, we sit down to feed. I patiently listen to the consultant tell me how to latch Ella onto my breast properly, which I feel I've been doing up till this point. I follow her example anyhow and force myself to relax as Ella gnaws into my skin causing sharp pains to pierce through my breast. Needless to say, the consultant's assessment is finalized as the pain not being caused by a poor latch, but rather from her frenulum.
I ask about and learn that there is an easy procedure to fix the problem that should result in a less painful form of breastfeeding. It is considered surgery, since they will have to use scissors, but the consultant assures me that it is a nearly painless snip for the baby from which she will recover quickly.
"We just don't want you to quit breastfeeding," she says passionately.

Ella just turned 2 weeks yesterday evening and I can't believe how many setbacks and trials we have already faced. Since I have already determined to breastfeed for the first year, giving up breastfeeding and switching to formula is NOT an option. But it sure seems tempting when the natural alternative is so painful! I am happy to know that it does not have to continue as it has, but that the healthy option will soon be the bonding option too!

Pumpkin Carving Party
Jelani wanted to do pumpkin carvings at our house this year. Ella and I took it easy since we've only been home from the hospital a week. The Charlishes are some of the quickest carvers I've ever met! We all came out with some really crazy looking pumpkins. Jelani carved one for Ella too! We'll take a picture of the "Memory Family Pumpkins" one of these nights and post a photo ( :

Happy One Week Ella!
This past week has been a dream... Jelani and I bonding with our newborn daughter, spending quality family time getting to know one another, eating all kinds of home-cooked meals brought over by friends and family...
Okay, well, maybe it's not 100% dream material. There are the long nights of sleep, wake, feed, change diapers, sleep, wake feed and change more diapers. You get the idea. Then there is the emotional roller-coaster caused by my post baby hormones, which is a ride the family is forced to take along beside me ( :
A few days ago I found myself having a small panic attack at the site of a small spider that had run inches past my feet. My own scream sent me into hysterics, causing my dear, sweet husband to run inside to my aid. When he found out it was just a spider, I started crying and apologizing. Through all of this, Ella slept like... well, like a baby ( :
Somehow, these potential "drawbacks have failed to phase me however. I find myself thankful for the painful learning process of breast feeding, as watching my precious baby fill her tummy gives me an incomparable peace. The daunting task of remaining rested for the next six weeks has managed to inspire within me a previously unfound patience... and these crazy hormone changes have become a reminder of wonderful changes ahead.
Obviously, having a child is a great responsibility and change, but magically and most importantly its also a great blessing and gift. I feel full, revived, in awe. I feel more in love with my gorgeous husband for aiding in the creation of our daughter. I am truly content ( :

New Baby Ella
So, after 48 hours of monitoring at the hospital, we arrived home on Wednesday with our newborn baby girl, Ella Marseille. Jelani was such a doll to give her my name as a 2nd middle name, which makes her full name read as:
Ella Marseille Lavenda Memory
We were able to establish breastfeeding within the first hour of Ella's life, so catching on these past few days has been easy peasy. We're giving her a little while to set the new schedule and she's doing a great job so far! We sleep while she sleeps (plus some for Jelani) and oh boy does she sleep right now!
Mama Memory (that is me) is sooo grateful for visitors during this first week. First of all, my body needs time to heal so my daily tasks are limited to changing diapers and breast-feeding- secondly, I LOVE the company during this emotionally overwhelming time. I find myself overjoyed most days to the bring of tears. Yet, other moments I feel entirely sad and lost. I think this may be the signs of early "baby blues". Our good friends and family have been a perfect support and encouragement through their company.
Well, I am getting tired and expecting a visitor any minute now.
Mama Memory: over and out.
