Our 4th of July

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July! This was our first 4th with our daughter, litte Ella, so we just HAD to follow the sparkle and smoke. We found ourselves on the south side of the river watching the big show pretty late on Sunday night, but the most fun was earlier in the day when we got to bbq and eat homemade flag cake. Anyhow, I'm posting some shots of our day... and I'd love to hear how everyone else's holiday was!

Ella was a bit scared of the louder fireworks.

But as usual, she was very entertained by Owen!

The cake was made by Savannah, but sadly, we ran out of propane before our pretty corn cooked all the way through!

This was Ella's first time seeing the sparklers lit:

But then she thought they were fun!

Family Get Away

Some friends of ours stopped by yesterday afternoon with the news that, hey, it's sunny at the beach today. Next thing you know, I've convinced Jelani to take a mini-vacation in the middle of our work week and off we go!

So, once we were all packed and on the road we began discussing which beach we should visit. I mentioned Cannon Beach, because it's closest and then went on to list Seaside and Manzanita since both are nearby. Jelani immediately fastened to the idea of Manzanita. "I've been to Seaside too many times. I'm tired of the Seaside beach." Unfortunately, due to an incredibly long drive through traffic, we had to cut our losses and drove into Cannon Beach instead. (We wanted to take advantage of the rare, warm evening.)
We were lucky to find a little cove that only a few other people knew about. With Ella packed up in the baby bjorn, we followed the trail down to the beach and strolled along until we found a beautiful drift wood to rest on. Ella even took a turn sitting up on it!

The seagulls and pink skies were such a beautiful backdrop, we just had to take some family photos!

I remember our trip to Hawaii, Ella screaming when we put her feet to the sand. But the beach yesterday was much cooler on her little toes. She really enjoyed crawling around and playing in the sand!

The following day, we made a trip to the Carousal Mall. Ella got to ride her very first Giraffe! We also visited the Seaside beach, which Jelani found out he'd never even been to! (So much for being tired of it, haha).

And what else filled up our mini-vacation, but lots and lots of FOOD!!! We visited a couple of good restaurants, but oddly enough, the service was equally TERRIBLE almost everywhere we went! You can see Jelani was very impressed with it! Obviously, Ella will have fun no matter where she goes!

Working Mama

The pressure to be "Super Mom" is building as the prospect of a very busy summer approaches. I find myself wondering what other working mom's are doing behind closed doors. Do they bounce kids on their knee with one hand, while typing (and editing photos) with the other? Are Portland's mom's checking for drool spots on their sweaters before meeting up with clients?
My favorite part of working from home this year has been watching my daughter grow plump, learn to crawl and gain a voice. She is my inspiration for everything now. I email clients and process photos while listening to her play with blocks beside my desk, or to the static of the monitor as she naps. I realize I am lucky to work from home with such a small child. The flexibility means that I get to watch my daughter grow up. I get to take breaks when she needs me and can take advantage of her down time from my home office.
But what happens when business begins to take off as it has been these past couple months? I'm not sure how other moms do it. I can't imagine leaving Ella all day as a regular part of my schedule, missing out on all the little moments and (gasp!) possibly the big ones!
In response to this growing need- this next season in our lives- I've begun to consider a more regular babysitter for Ella, someone who can watch her and play with her while I'm here. Of course, we have a neighborhood friend who can watch her sporadically, but I'm talking about a regular schedule. Something that I can create my work flow around.
Anyhow, Jelani and I have the subject on the table. We are excited to embrace our new roles as parents and want to make the best decision for Ella and our new, little family. I just know that my daughter, no matter what, will always be a source of inspiration and motivation for my work- never a hindrance!

quilted silence

we are ear to ear, arm to arm,
barely room for elbows, limbs and arms.
my face is thin, eyes set too deep, skin a garish geisha white.
Lisa, my skinny suicidal, drunken aunt tilts her swollen neck and smiles sober.
this was back before she leaves Dave and the kids
before she leaves the yellow house and her garden,
before she leaves her homemade soaps, lined up in brightly labeled boxes.
I wonder if he glimpses
through that lens
the months ahead of fiery accusations, packed bags, relentless tears, empty drawers.
we crush into the frame
with elbows, arms and fingers mangled in embrace.
I stretch my dusty lips into a trepid strip. yours are painted wet.
poised behind, the house swells with cedar breath,
colored blue.
we stay up through the night
sharing secrets beneath the sparkling Redmond sky.
daddy touched me,
you say
with a moon-shadowed calf peeping dully through the folds of our scarlet summer quilt.
I rock our tired frames, sprawling weary, aching,
sharply in that old cedar swing..
you’re just going to sit there, you remark
as my legs begin to tire and I picture grandpa‘s bible and his pastor and his church.
I draw my bare, unpainted toes from the yellowed, springing planks;
the swinging slows.
you’re not going to say anything, try to make it better, fill up the silence, you whisper.
and we sit there, slumped, limbs interlacing red, luscious cotton.
And now you smile as the creaking silence sweeps across the porch and down the stairs where it bursts into a flame of yellow anger.
